Flash Player 10 breaks file uploads

   PERMALINK   10/22/2008

It appears that Adobe has introduced a new level of security when it comes to uploading files in the new Flash Player. The issue involves how you call the FileReference.browse() method, which opens the file dialog box and lets you choose a file to upload to the server. In previous versions of Flash you were allowed to call this method programatically. However, in the latest beta of Flash Player 10 - if the browse() method call is not directly initiated by a user click, a security exception is thrown.

This new layer of security has sparked a huge controversy amongst WordPress and Flickr users, as well as anyone else who is using SWFUpload to handle uploading their files. This is because using the Actionscript ExternalInterface to spawn a file dialog box is now a violation of this new security policy, which renders SWFUpload completely useless. I know the pressure is really on Adobe right now to fix this and I am really interested to see if they will budge in future releases.
